Sargassum is the question we hear most before a trip to the Mexican Caribbean. 2026 has been an intense season in the region. This note explains what happens on Isla Mujeres and how to plan with real information.
What sargassum is
It is a seaweed that floats in the open ocean and reaches the coast with wind and currents, mostly from spring to late summer. It is not pollution: it is a natural phenomenon that changes from year to year and from week to week.
Why Playa Norte is different
Sargassum mainly arrives on coasts that face east, toward the open sea. Playa Norte sits at the northern tip of the island and faces north and west, in sheltered, shallow water. That is why it usually receives much less than exposed beaches. Usually does not mean never: some days it arrives, and it helps to know before you go.
Where to check
- The state of Quintana Roo publishes a sargassum alert map by area. Check the Isla Mujeres status the week of your trip.
- Ask the front desk the day before: the team sees the beach every morning.
- Do not decide based on a viral photo from another beach: the east coast and Playa Norte behave differently.
If the sea does not cooperate one day
The Casa del Jaguar pool is open from 9:00 to 19:00. It is a good day for Zazil-ha spa, a long lunch at Oceanvs or a drive to Punta Sur. Read more about pool and sea on the same day.
